Summer fitness activities to try

Stay Active: Fun Fitness Activities to Try This Summer

Looking for ways to stay active this Summer?

Now that the weather has warmed up, it’s the ideal time to take part in fun fitness activities that not only benefit your physical health but your mental health too.

Regular exercise helps to improve brain activity, strengthen bones and muscles, keep your heart healthy and support you in maintaining a healthy weight. In terms of mental benefits, it can give you more energy, boost mood, improve sleep and reduce stress levels.

If you decide to take up a team sport or group exercise, this also gives you the opportunity to get there and meet new people. Developing relationships with your peers is a great way to combat loneliness, improve communications skills and maybe even make some friends for life!

This is just a few examples but there are many more that can be gained through exercise!

We have put together a list of some sports activities to try this Summer.

Swimming

Head to the nearest pool or beach and take a refreshing swim to cool down in the hot weather. Swimming is a great full-body workout that's easy on the joints, making it ideal for all ages.

Stand-up paddleboarding

Stand-up paddleboarding is the perfect choice for any fun-seekers out there. It’s a great way. to improve balance and strengthen your core while at the same time enjoying the tranquillity of the calm waters.

Hiking

Explore nature by going on hikes in nearby trails or national parks where you can take in breath-taking views and connect with nature.

Outdoor yoga

Find a peaceful spot in a park or your backyard and practice yoga outdoors, or even join an outside class (there are lots of them out there!). Yoga not only enhances flexibility and strength but also helps to reduce stress and create a positive mindset.

Cycling

Why not jump on your bike and go for a ride? You can cycle down your local cycle path, round your neighbourhood or go on a bigger adventure, for example, on one of National Trust’s many mountain bike routes.

Outdoor boot camp

Join an outdoor boot camp class to test your fitness to the limits. Depending on the type of class you pick, you will usually work on improving cardio, strength and agility. This is also a great way to meet new people too!

Kayaking or canoeing

If you have access to a lake or river, kayaking or canoeing are the perfect Summer sports to try. It's an excellent upper body and core workout which offers stunning views and beautiful backdrops.

Beach jog or run

Take advantage of the sandy shorelines and go for a jog or run on the beach. The uneven surface engages different muscles and offers a unique workout experience.

Outdoor group fitness classes

Look for outdoor group fitness classes in your area, such as Zumba, outdoor yoga, or HIIT sessions. Exercising with others can be both enjoyable and motivating.

Remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and listen to your body while getting involved with any of these activities. Most importantly, have fun, stay active and make the most of your summer!
