How to pack away and store Christmas decorations
Did you know that many people believe it's bad luck to leave decorations up later than the 5th or 6th of December?
With Christmas over for another year, you might be starting to take them down already, or alternatively you might extent the festive period as long as you can by leaving them up until early January.
Packing away and storing Christmas decorations properly can help ensure they stay in good condition and are easy to find and use again next year.
Here are some of our top tips...
Sort and declutter
Before packing, go through your decorations and declutter. Get rid of anything that's broken, worn out, or no longer needed. This will make packing and unpacking easier and keep your storage space more organized.
Use clear containers
Invest in clear plastic containers for storage. Transparent containers make it easy to see what's inside without having to open each box. Label the boxes with the contents, so you can quickly identify them.
Wrap fragile items
For fragile ornaments, lights, or delicate decorations, wrap them individually in tissue paper, bubble wrap, or old newspapers to prevent breakage during storage.
Invest in ornament storage boxes
Ornament storage boxes with individual compartments can help protect delicate ornaments. These boxes often have dividers or layers that provide a safe space for each ornament.
Wrap lights around cardboard
To prevent Christmas lights from tangling, wrap them around a piece of cardboard or use a specialized light storage reel. Make sure to secure the ends to prevent unravelling.
Store wreaths in containers
If you have artificial wreaths, consider storing them in containers designed to protect their shape. Alternatively, you can use large plastic bags or garbage bags to cover and protect them.
Use resealable bags for small items
Resealable bags, like the ones you use to keep food fresh, are handy for storing small items like tree ornaments hooks, spare bulbs, or other tiny decorations. Label the bags accordingly and place them in larger containers.
Keep tree and garlands in tree bags
If you have an artificial tree, store it in a tree storage bag to protect it from dust and damage. Large, zippered bags are also available for garlands and other large decorations.
Protect linens and fabrics
Store holiday linens, such as tablecloths and napkins, in a cool, dry place. It may be a good idea to use clothing bags to protect them from dust, damp and pests.
Store in a cool, dry place
Choose a storage area that is cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight. Avoid basements or attics, as extreme temperatures and humidity can damage decorations over time.
Take photos
Before dismantling your decorations, take photos of your holiday setup. This will serve as a reference for next year and help you recreate the look you enjoyed.
Label everything
Label each box or container clearly with what it contains. This will make it easier to locate specific items next year without having to open every box.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your Christmas decorations are stored in an organised and protective manner, making the decorating process for the next Christmas much smoother.
