How to make the most of the last bank holiday before Christmas

How to make the most of the last bank holiday before Christmas

Are you ready for the last Bank Holiday before Christmas?

Although it seems daunting to think about Christmas now,  it's important to acknowledge the last stretch of summer in order to make the most.

Spending time with loved ones, starting a new craft project or even heading away for the weekend are some great examples of things you could do.

Not sure how to spend it? Check out some of our top inspiration.

Enjoy a city break

Explore a nearby city you haven't visited yet. Spend the day visiting museums, enjoying local cuisine and sightseeing.

Relax on a nature retreat

Set off to the countryside or the coast for some fresh air and tranquillity. You could book a cosy cottage or a cabin for the ultimate peaceful retreat.

Dine al fresco

If the weather is nice, gather friends and family for an outdoor BBQ or picnic. This is the perfect chance to catch up over some delicious homemade food and drinks.

It's party time!

If you're feeling especially sociable, why not host a themed party at home? This could be anything from Disney themed to a "pre-Christmas" gathering or even a "end of summer" bash.

Relax & unwind

Treat yourself to a spa day, either at home with face and hair masks or by booking a session at a local spa. This is a great way to destress from work (and the school summer holidays!)

It's okay to have a lazy day

Sometimes, the best way to spend a day off is by doing nothing at all. Catch up on your favorite shows, read a book or take a much-needed nap, and if you have kids to entertain, you could have a movie day with popcorn, sweets and blankets!

Hiking or biking

Get outdoors and take advantage of the extra day off to explore local trails or parks. This is a good way to get some exercise and fresh air which can be extremely beneficial to your physical and mental wellbeing.

Water activities

If you live near a lake or the coast, consider kayaking, paddleboarding or a beach day. This a fun activity that all the family can enjoy!

Cooking or baking

If you enjoy cooking or baking, this is a good opportunity to try making something new. There is less pressure than cooking at Christmas, making it the idea time to practice anything you want to cook later in the year.

Creative projects

If you want to feel like you have done something productive with your time off, you could dedicate some time for starting a creative project, such as painting, crafting or photography.

Get ahead with festive shopping

There are only 4 more paydays left before Christmas! While you have time, it's important to start thinking about gifts and finances for the festive season. You could use the Bank Holiday to begin Christmas shopping or making your own decorations.

Plan your holidays

Get organised by spending this time planning any upcoming holiday events, trips or family gatherings, especially if travel and accommodation is involved.

Festivals and fairs

Many local communities run festivals, fairs and markets over the bank holiday weekend and these are one of the most family-friendly options too.

Volunteer

Spend the day volunteering for a local charity or community project. It's a fulfilling way to give back and make a difference.

Try a new workout

Join a special fitness class or try something new like yoga, Pilates or a dance class.

Outdoor exercise

Test your fitness and stamina by going for a run, join a group hike, or even signing up to an outdoor workout session. This is a good opportunity to meet new people and socialise too.

Games day

Plan a day of board games or video games with your family. Monopoly, Scrabble and Snakes & Ladders are often popular choices - as long as you can handle the competition!

Outdoor adventure

Take all the family on a fun day out, like visiting a zoo, theme park, or botanical garden.

Our top tips:

Plan ahead: Booking things in advance can help ensure you get the most out of your day.
Check the weather: This can help you choose between outdoor and indoor activities.
Stay flexible: Sometimes the best plans are spontaneous, so leave room for relaxation or a last-minute adventure.

This way, you'll end the long weekend feeling refreshed and ready for the run-up to Christmas!
